What is Molded Pulp Packaging?

Molded pulp packaging (also called molded fiber packaging) is an eco-friendly packaging material made from recycled paper, cardboard, and natural plant fibers including bagasse, bamboo, and wheat straw. It is 100% biodegradable, compostable within 90 days, and fully recyclable in the paper waste stream.

The 5-Step Manufacturing Process

Step 1: Pulping

Raw materials (recycled newsprint, kraft paper, bagasse) are mixed with water in a hydropulper to create a fiber slurry at 3-5% consistency. Water-resistant agents, dyes (Pantone-matched), and strength enhancers are introduced at this stage for custom requirements.

Step 2: Molding / Forming

The fiber slurry is pumped into forming molds where vacuum suction draws fibers onto the mold surface. Three primary methods are used depending on the application:

Step 3: Drying

Freshly formed products contain 65-75% moisture. Drying methods include conveyor drying at 120-180?C (20-40 minutes), in-mold hot press drying at 150-200?C, and microwave-assisted drying which reduces cycle time by up to 40%.

Step 4: Hot Pressing & Finishing

For premium packaging, hot press molds apply 15-40 tons of pressure at 150-200?C. This achieves 0.2mm dimensional tolerance and up to 8mm relief depth for embossed logos, brand textures, and decorative patterns ??all formed directly into the fiber without inks or adhesives.

Step 5: Trimming & Quality Control

Edge trimming removes excess material. QC inspection checks weight consistency (?3%), dimensional accuracy, drop test performance (ISTA standards), and moisture content. Final products are packed and prepared for shipment.
