What should a molded pulp meat tray be specified against?
Specify the tray against the fluid it must manage, not only its dimensions. Purge volume per kilogram of product, the pack format and film, the refrigerated case temperature and the intended stack height together set the cavity depth, wall thickness, surface treatment and whether an absorbent pad is needed at all. A tray ordered by length, width and depth gives the supplier no basis for choosing wet strength or flange flatness, and the resulting mismatch usually appears as fluid in the base or a seal that will not hold.
Do meat and poultry trays need an absorbent pad or a SAP liner?
It depends on purge volume. Well-drained cuts may need no liner; fillets, steaks and chops typically need a cellulose absorbent pad; ground meat and skin-on poultry usually need a superabsorbent polymer composite pad, because fluid keeps releasing during chilled display. The pad choice also constrains tray design, because a SAP pad normally backs onto a flat, sealed base rather than a ribbed one. Buyers moving a line from foam should re-check pad fit, since the molded pulp cavity rarely matches the foam cavity exactly.
Are molded pulp trays compatible with MAP and skin-pack films?
They can be, provided the sealing flange is engineered for the film. Modified atmosphere packaging and skin-pack formats need a flat, consistent flange so the seal forms across the full perimeter, and skin pack in particular needs a smooth cavity that does not shed fiber lint onto the product. Send the film specification and target gas mix to the tray supplier and ask for sealed sample packs for film-compatibility testing before tooling is cut. That test settles flange flatness, seal strength and lint behaviour at sample cost rather than at production cost.
How do molded pulp trays hold up in a refrigerated display case?
A cold case is a wet environment that cycles, so the tray must keep its shape through condensation and restocking. Higher wet-strength sizing limits surface softening at the rim, where a lost seal breaks modified atmosphere packaging. Freezer display adds ice crystal formation and thaw drip, which call for freeze-tolerant fiber blends and a drain path. State the case temperature range and the display life in the brief, because a tray that performs at chill can still soften or creep in a frozen leg of the route.
How should stack height and pallet pattern be briefed?
Give the supplier the intended pallet pattern and maximum stack height, then ask for the pack to be validated as a unit rather than as a single tray. Compression creep under a palletised load over a long chilled transit is a common cause of edge crushing and rim deformation, and it is not visible in a single-tray test. Wall thickness plus corner support carry the load, so these fields should be agreed before tooling. Transit test protocols that simulate vibration and compression give a repeatable way to confirm the design.
Are molded pulp meat trays food-contact safe and compostable?
Both are documented properties, not assumptions. Food-contact status should be confirmed per SKU, because the tray, the absorbent pad and the film are separate food-contact articles. Where a compostability claim is intended for retail, ask the supplier to name the standard behind it, such as EN 13432 or ASTM D6400, and to state the certification route, with the evidence kept in the specification file.
