What is molded pulp industrial dunnage used for?

Industrial dunnage is the structural packaging that holds a heavy product inside its container and on its pallet. Molded pulp serves as pallet trays, end caps, corner blocks, layer pads and internal partitions for appliances, pumps, electronics, batteries and machined parts. Because the article is formed around the product from fiber, it can take over the load path that timber blocks and foam inserts previously carried, provided the unit weight, the stack height and the journey are specified and a compression datum is obtained rather than a tray drawing alone.

Which ISTA test should molded pulp dunnage pass?

Match the protocol to the journey. A new design screened before tooling usually starts with an ISTA 1-series non-simulation integrity test. A program shipping parcels, LTL freight and full containers is normally evaluated against an ISTA 3-series general simulation sequence. Where two dunnage designs must be compared on one journey, ASTM D4169 gives a shared method and ASTM D642 provides the compressive strength datum for the stack. The named protocol, the conditioning used and the dated report belong in the supplier qualification file per SKU.

How much weight can a molded pulp pallet tray carry?

The honest answer is the tested compression datum, not a generic figure. Capacity depends on fiber type, wall thickness, rib geometry, the stack height the tray will actually see and the moisture content at loading, so the same drawing can hold at one stack height and fail at another. Buyers should state the stack height and the load duration, ask for a compression test at standard conditions of 23 degrees Celsius and 50 percent relative humidity, and cap individual article weight against manual handling limits and the pallet's rated capacity.

Does molded pulp dunnage need moisture control for export?

Yes. Molded pulp is fiber, and fiber loses stiffness as it takes on moisture. A tray tested dry in a laboratory can read strong and still creep in a container that spends six weeks at sea. Write a conditioned moisture window into the specification, test at standard conditions, and add a barrier bag or desiccant where the cargo is sensitive. Destination storage matters as well: dunnage unpacked into a humid warehouse re-absorbs moisture, so the carton should carry a storage instruction.

Is molded pulp dunnage subject to ISPM 15 wood packaging rules?

No. ISPM 15 applies to solid wood packaging material - timber pallets, crates, blocks and dunnage - which must be treated and marked before entering most markets. Processed fiber articles such as molded pulp sit outside that regime, so a program that replaces timber blocks with molded pulp removes a treatment and marking step from the export file. The trade-off is that the pulp article now carries the structural duty the timber block carried, which is why the compression datum and the load path matter more, not less.

How should molded pulp dunnage be specified in an RFQ?

Put five things in writing: the unit weight and centre of gravity, the drop height and vibration profile you will test to, the stack height and its duration, the pallet footprint and container type, and the moisture conditioning window. Add the acceptance test - which ISTA or ASTM method, at what conditioning - and the document you expect per shipment. A tray quoted without those inputs is a guess, and it will be priced as one. Suppliers can then quote geometry, tooling and a tested load path instead of a unit price per gram.
