Do molded pulp cup lids leak on hot coffee?
They leak when the lid is not matched to the cup rim, not because fiber is inherently leaky. A snap-fit lid with the correct interference holds a rolled fiber rim and keeps hot liquid off the seam; seepage usually traces back to an uncoated lid interior or a mismatched diameter. Test the lid and cup as one system — interference in millimeters, barrier hold-out at 90 C — rather than buying the two parts against separate specs.
Why does coffee seep along the rim seam?
Rim-seam seepage is an interference failure. If the lid lip does not compress the rolled cup rim, a thin liquid film travels the seam and softens the fiber lip until it buckles. Specify an interference range in millimeters, verify it against cups from every mold on the line, and re-check after a full run — rim diameter drifts between molds, which is what turns a passing sample into a leaking service day.
What coating keeps a molded pulp lid from wicking?
A wet-strength, PFAS-free water-based barrier on the food-contact side is the current default for hot drinks. It keeps condensate and hot liquid from migrating into the fiber wall and can be certified for both food contact and compostability. Wax softens with heat and PLA linings lose structure near 60 C, so neither holds hot coffee as well as a properly specified water-based barrier.
Are fiber cup lids compostable along with the cup?
Only when the finished lid carries its own live certification listing. The lid's coating, ink, and any adhesive are separate from the cup, so a compostable cup topped with an uncertified lid breaks the claim. Check the exact lid SKU against BPI (ASTM D6400) in North America or TüV OK Compost in Europe before printing any compostability statement on a menu or pack.
How should a café test a molded pulp lid before switching?
Run a five-check gate on your hottest drink: invert a filled cup for 60 seconds over a tray and watch for film; hold it inverted for 5 minutes and inspect the rim seam; lift a full cup by the lid and shake gently to check pop-off; unseat the lid after 10 minutes and look for a softened, delaminated lip; then refill and repeat three times to expose cumulative wicking. Any film, pop-off, or delaminated rim is a fail.
What fit specs belong in a cup lid PO?
Six: the fit system (snap-fit with a stated interference range in millimeters), a PFAS-free wet-strength barrier rated for hot liquid, a steam vent or anti-drip ridge, a per-SKU food-contact statement, a live per-SKU compostability listing, and a 90 C inverted leak-test report.
