Can heat-seal film bond to a molded pulp bowl rim?

Yes, when the bowl is formed with a flat sealing land of adequate width and the film's seal layer is made for a fiber surface. Molded fiber rims are porous and slightly uneven, so the bond depends on land width, sealing pressure and dwell time rather than on the film alone. A rim that is too narrow or too rough leaves unbonded gaps that leak under a hot, wet fill even with a perfectly certified film.

Why does a sealed compostable bowl leak at the seam?

Most seam leaks are incomplete seals, not weak film. If the heated platen does not contact the full rim land, or the film runs below its activation temperature, part of the seam never forms and liquid finds it. The second cause is rim height variation between bowls from the same mold set, because it changes how much pressure reaches the interface on each cavity. Measure rim height across the whole set before blaming the film.

What seal strength should a molded pulp bowl target?

Target a peel strength high enough that the film tears beside the seal instead of lifting cleanly off the rim during a normal peel, then confirm it after a hot fill and a 24-hour chill at 4 C. The number that matters is the one measured on your real bowl, real film and real product, reported in grams per 25 mm. Treat any film data-sheet value as a starting point and re-run the peel test on production samples drawn from every mold.

Which films work on a compostable fiber bowl?

Paper/PLA laminates, PLA-based lidding and cellulose-based films all bond to a fiber rim and can hold a certified compostability listing. PP and PE films seal strongly but break the compostable claim, so they are only usable where the bowl is not sold as compostable. Check the film's seal window against the heat your bowl can survive, then verify both surfaces carry their own food-contact statement — the bowl's clearance does not cover the film seated on it.

How do you test a bowl and film before a full run?

Five checks: peel a sealed bowl by hand and confirm the film tears beside the seam rather than lifting off; pull a 25 mm strip on a peel tester and compare it with the accepted value; fill at your hottest process temperature, seal and invert for 60 seconds over a tray; chill the filled bowl to 4 C for 24 hours and re-inspect for contraction lift; and repeat across bowls from every mold in the set. Any clean lift, film on the tray or after-chill seam gap is a fail.

Do bowl and film need separate certifications?

Yes. The bowl, its coating, the film's seal layer and any ink each carry their own food-contact status, and the compostability claim belongs to the finished assembly.
