What is ISTA transit testing and why does it matter for molded pulp?
ISTA publishes standardised distribution test procedures simulating the handling, vibration, compression and impact a packaged product meets between production and the customer. For molded pulp, which replaces foam and plastic cushioning, the test is the evidence that the fiber geometry actually protects the product. Without a test on the real article inside the real pack, a cushioning claim is a drawing rather than a result, and a drawing cannot be compared against the failure that arrives as a customer claim.
Which ISTA series applies to molded pulp packaging?
The right series depends on the distribution route, not the material. Non-simulation and simulation performance tests cover single-package shipments by parcel and by less-than-truckload freight, while other series address over-the-road and unitised loads. Choose by how the product actually travels — parcel, LTL, full truckload, ocean container, air — and test the packaged configuration that ships, including the outer carton and the pallet pattern. The unit of test matters as much as the route.
Should transit testing use production parts or prototypes?

A prototype made by hand or through a different mould route can pass a test that the production article fails, because density, wall thickness and dimensional tolerance all shift between sample and run. If a test must run before the production tool is ready, the report should state that the result applies to the prototype only, and the test should be repeated on production articles before tooling sign-off. How should a transit test report be read?
For the failure mode rather than a pass or fail. Product damage with an intact insert means insufficient cushioning travel; a fractured rib means the load path is too thin for the impact direction; deformation with no product damage may be an acceptable compression limit; corner damage at pallet level is a carton or pallet-pattern problem rather than an insert problem; and damage appearing only after humidity exposure points to moisture-driven strength loss. Each mode has a different design response, which is why a certificate alone is of little use.
Does a marginal pass need action?
Yes. A design that passes by a small margin at the tested severity has no allowance for a heavier product variant, a longer route, or a packaging change made by a fulfilment partner. Treat a marginal result as a redesign trigger or, at minimum, document the margin and re-test before extending the design to another product or channel. Retaining the tested samples lets a later complaint be compared against the article that passed, which is the cheapest way to distinguish a design problem from a handling problem.
What transit-test clause belongs in the supplier agreement?
A qualification report before first production release; the tested configuration recorded, including article revision, carton and pallet pattern; a re-test trigger on any fiber, coating or geometry change; retention of tested samples by both parties; report content covering revision, conditioning and failure mode; and a periodic re-test interval or volume. The change trigger matters most, because fiber mix adjustments, coating substitutions and minor die revisions all move stiffness and quietly invalidate a previous transit result.
