What are compostable plates made of?
Compostable plates are made from plant fiber — most commonly bagasse (sugarcane residue) or molded pulp (recycled paper fiber). Both are renewable, plastic-free, and compost in industrial facilities within 60-90 days, unlike paper plates with plastic coatings.
What is the difference between bagasse and molded pulp plates?
Bagasse plates come from sugarcane fiber left after juice extraction, giving them a smooth, off-white finish and strong heat resistance. Molded pulp plates come from recycled paper and have a more textured surface. Bagasse is generally sturdier for wet or oily food; both are fully compostable.
How do I know a plate is actually compostable?
Look for BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) or TÜV OK Compost certification, not just the word "compostable." Certified products must meet ASTM D6400 or EN 13432 standards, which require 90%+ disintegration within a set time and no toxic residue. Request the certificate number from your supplier.
Do compostable plates work with hot and oily food?
Yes, bagasse plates handle hot food up to 200°F and resist oil and moisture without a plastic lining. Molded pulp plates also tolerate hot food, though very wet dishes may soften the surface. Neither should go in a microwave for extended periods.
Can I compost these plates at home?
Industrial composting is the reliable path: home compost piles rarely reach the sustained heat needed for certified disintegration. Some BPI "home compostable" products do exist. If home composting matters to you, confirm the specific home-compost certification before buying.
