What coating makes compostable packaging moisture-resistant?

Compostable moisture barriers are typically water-based dispersion coatings, bio-based polymer coatings, or wax-free formulations that add water resistance while remaining compatible with the compostability standard the pack must meet. The choice is a three-way balance: the barrier must resist the product's moisture, keep its compostability certification, and be food-contact compliant under the destination market's rules.

Why must the barrier coating be PFAS-free?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, historically used for oil and water resistance, face tightening restriction across major markets, so buyers increasingly require a PFAS-free barrier as a specification. A PFAS-free claim must be documented per SKU and tested, not asserted, and it must be verified independently of the compostability certificate, because the two claims answer different questions.

Does a moisture barrier break compostability?

Not necessarily. A barrier that is compostable by design — a dispersion or bio-based coating that breaks down with the fiber — can preserve the pack's compostability, but a non-compostable barrier can invalidate it. The relevant evidence is the compostability certificate covering the coated product, not the uncoated substrate, so specify and certify the finished, coated article.

Why do moisture-resistant packs still fail at the filling line?

Because the coating was chosen for the wrong condition. A barrier specified for condensation softens under hot soup; a barrier for a dry snack is not a barrier for hot liquid. The coating was water-resistant in general and still did not match the product's moisture load, temperature and hold time. State the product condition and let it select the coating, rather than selecting a coating and hoping the product fits.

How do I document the PFAS-free claim properly?

Require a supplier disclosure naming the coating chemistry, a test report per SKU, and a document revision tying the claim to the specific product. Keep it as a separate file from the compostability certificate, because a pack can be certified compostable and still carry PFAS in its barrier. A PFAS-free claim asserted without a test and a per-SKU scope is a claim the buyer cannot substantiate.

Why must the coated article be certified, not the substrate?

Because the composter sees the coated article, not the uncoated fiber. Certifying the uncoated bowl and then applying a barrier that was never tested with the fiber leaves the barrier unproven, and a non-compostable liner quietly converts a compostable pack into a conventional one. Require the certificate to name the coated SKU and confirm any liner or additive is itself compostable under the same standard.
