The Certification Maze Nobody Explains
You're sourcing molded pulp packaging. Your European client wants "certified compostable." Your US distributor asks for "BPI certified." Your marketing team wants "FSC" on the box. Three different certifications, three different standards, and nobody has explained the difference — until now.
This guide breaks down every major molded pulp certification, what they actually verify, and how to use them as a sales advantage, not just a compliance checkbox.
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council): The Fiber Source Stamp
What it certifies: The wood/paper fiber in your molded pulp came from responsibly managed forests — not illegal logging, not old-growth clear-cutting.
Three FSC labels that matter for packaging:
- FSC 100%: All fiber from FSC-certified forests. Hardest to achieve, strongest claim.
- FSC Mix: Blend of FSC-certified fiber, recycled material, and/or controlled wood. Most common for molded pulp.
- FSC Recycled: 100% post-consumer recycled fiber. Strongest sustainability story for consumer-facing brands.
B2B value: European retailers (Lidl, Carrefour, IKEA) increasingly require FSC on packaging. Without it, you're locked out of their supply chain. FSC Mix certification typically adds 3-8% to raw material cost but unlocks 30-50% larger addressable market.
BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute): The Compostability Gold Standard for North America
What it certifies: Your packaging will fully biodegrade in an industrial composting facility within 180 days, leaving no toxic residue.
Critical nuance most buyers miss: BPI certification is based on ASTM D6400 — which tests for industrial composting (58°C, controlled humidity), NOT backyard composting. If your end customer puts BPI-certified packaging in their garden compost pile, it may not break down. This is the #1 source of customer complaints we see.
B2B value: Required by most US municipal composting programs and corporate zero-waste pledges. States like California (SB 54) and Washington are mandating compostable packaging by 2032. Getting BPI now = first-mover advantage.
OK Compost (TÜV Austria): The European Equivalent
Two tiers that matter:
- OK Compost INDUSTRIAL (EN 13432): Equivalent to BPI. Requires industrial facility. This is the minimum for EU market access.
- OK Compost HOME: Biodegrades in ambient temperature (20-30°C) home composting. Much harder to achieve — requires thinner material gauge and specific fiber blends. If your packaging has this, you can charge a 15-25% premium.
Key difference from BPI: TÜV's OK Compost HOME is the only certification that validates backyard compostability. For D2C brands selling to eco-conscious consumers, this is the holy grail.
