A warped base measured on a flat surface with feeler gauge is a different test from a warped base judged by eye, and both are legitimate as long as the document names one. Classifying defects is also the step that converts a supplier's quality claim into a contractual one, because a defect class with a stated acceptance level can be verified from a delivered lot.

The classification should be written per product family, because the same physical flaw changes class across uses. A faint surface mark on a protective insert is minor; the same mark on a premium gift box lid that a consumer photographs is major. That is a commercial judgement, and it belongs to the buyer to make before sampling rather than to the inspector at the goods-in dock.

Two of these rows decide whether the inspection finds anything. Pulling the whole sample from one carton tests the supplier's packing, not the production run; a sample spread across pallets and cartons is the only one that estimates the lot. Checking critical characteristics first matters because cosmetic appearance is where inspectors drift, and a plan that starts with appearance spends its time budget on the least consequential class.

Conditioning deserves a sentence of its own. Molded pulp takes on moisture during transit, and a tray measured straight off a damp container can read differently from the same tray after a day in the warehouse. Where dimensional acceptance matters, state the conditioning time and environment in the inspection procedure, or measure the same sample twice and reconcile.

Two habits make this table live. First, record the actual value rather than a tick, because distributions reveal drift before failures do — a lot that is inside tolerance but clustered at one edge of the band is a warning. Two clauses make the table enforceable. The first is the decision clock: every disposition needs a maximum time before the default applies, because the most expensive outcome is not a rejection but a pallet in limbo. The second is the evidence requirement: the buyer's inspection record, photographs and retained samples, and the supplier's right to re-inspect at their own cost within a stated window.

Where the failure touches food contact — a coating gap, a contamination, an undocumented change — the disposition should be a return regardless of cosmetic condition, because the documentation the buyer relied on is no longer valid. That rule links inspection directly to the compliance file, and it is why the defect classification matters beyond sorting.
