Molded pulp has a property that makes route selection unusually important: it is hygroscopic. Fiber absorbs moisture, and a container crossing an ocean is a different environment from a parcel moving through a domestic network. A design that passes a parcel test can lose compression strength on a humid ocean leg, so a container-shipping programme should include the environmental component in the test scope, or at least repeat the compression test on conditioned articles.

The most common failure is the prototype: a hand-formed or prototype-tool sample tested before the production tool exists. Prototypes are useful for early geometry decisions and useless as qualification evidence, because the production article will differ in density and tolerance. If a programme has to test before the production tool is ready, the report must state that the result applies to the prototype only, and the test must be repeated on production articles before the tooling is signed off.

The revision field is the second discipline. A test report tied to a drawing revision is evidence; a report tied to "the insert for product X" becomes ambiguous the first time the geometry changes. Reading the failure mode is what turns a test into an engineering decision. A cracked rib at the product seat and a dented carton corner are different problems, and only one of them is a molded pulp design problem. The second common outcome is a marginal pass, which is worth treating as a caution: a design that passes by a small margin at the test severity is a design with no allowance for a heavier variant, a longer route, or a packaging change made by a fulfilment partner.
